1.                 Draft a formal dialogue between Gita Naidu and Madhu Kumar who meet at the post office. They stay in the same locality, but do not know each other very well. It is three o’clock in the afternoon.

 Gita Naidu : I am fine, thank you. Very true, we meet after a long time.  If I am guessing right, we meet last month at the school for the annual function of kids. By the way once again congratulations for your son’s achievement in national chess competition. He is a very sweet child.

Madhu Kumar : Thank you so much ma’am. Indeed we met last month. I saw the Carnatic dance by your daughter, she was very elegant in her performance. Is she doing some classes for the same?

Gita Naidu : Thank you for your kind words, Mr. Kumar. Will surely convey your compliment to Shrusti. She is practising her art for the last 5 years. She is very passionate with her performance. By the way, what made you visit the post office? I am here to send some photos of Shrusti’s performance to her grandparents.

Madhu Kumar : Okay. Your parents would feel proud looking at the pictures. I came to buy some stamps and send this letter of application for the Chess competition to be held in Delhi next month. Along with the online form, they have mentioned on the website that they require hard copy of the form as well. Have a nice day, Mrs. Naidu.

Gita Naidu : Thank you and you too enjoy your day. Bye! 

Madhu Kumar :  Good bye. 

2.                 Annie is at the birthday party of a friend, Smita. She has not met Smita’s father, so she introduces herself and tells him a little about herself.

Smita	: Oh yes! I remember the dress now. Talking about the house, this construction is my father’s design. He is an architect and is into designing homes. Hey! You yourself is a very good artist, I have seen your sketch works. I think you should meet my father, you will get more inspiration to draw and also who knows, you might get some more insight to plan your future with your skills.
Annie	: Very true Smita. Where is your father? Since I have never met your parents, I think I should be taking this opportunity to meet them.
Smita	: Come this way.   (Reaching the space where her father was standing)  Here! Meet my father.
Father	: This is my friend, Annie, who loves art. I think you could help her to seek guidance related to how she can channel her skills to better use.
Annie	: Annie, he is my father, Mr. Shamkumar and the beautiful lady sitting next to him is Mrs. Shradha, my mother.
Smita’s father	: Hello Annie. It’s a pleasure to finally have met you.  Smita keeps talking about you a lot. Glad that you both have bonded pretty well.
Annie	: Hello Uncle. Thank you so much for your kind words. She is just over reacting to my work. I am still learning, and just keep sketching when I get some time.
Smita’s father	: That is indeed a great way to use your free time, Annie. So tell me Annie what sort of artwork do you prefer? And what is the inspiration behind your interest in artwork?
Annie	: Uncle, my mother is an art teacher. From her I used to learn. I prefer architectural drawings surrounding more natural elements. I visualise living in a multi- utility space, surrounded by lots of trees, mountains near the sea.
Smita’s father	: That is a really stunning concept Annie. I would love to see your artwork. Maybe we can work on some good ideas. Do enjoy the party dear. And hope to see you often. Smita’s mother is also into sketching, we all plan something productive.
Annie	: Surely I will stay connected with both of you.  Thank you so much for guiding me right.

VALUES IN LIFE 

-Rudyard Kipling 

A poet and novelist from England, Rudyard Kipling, is remembered for his children's  stories, which include ‘Kim’, ‘Just So Stories’ and the always popular ‘The Jungle Book’. In 1907, he was awarded noble prize for literature. The present speech, ‘Values in Life', is taken from ‘A Book of Words’, which is a collection of Kipling's collected speeches. The speech was first given to a group of University students in Canada. 

Kipling encourages using your left hand to gain wealth while keeping your right hand for doing rightful work in life. Acquiring wealth for wealth sake, according to Kipling is equal to wasting one’s life. Instead one should consider to aim for balance in life. Wealth is nothing but illusion and that it is never a criteria to be happy. One should seek to help one another and not be greedy or self centered. 

Kipling suggests that today’s youth doesn’t give much heed (attention) to speech.

The author calls it a privilege to be able to hear or have conversation with elderly or wiser people. He says that the young men and women are made to believe that the world is governed by the idea of wealth. 

Though, there are some to whom the idea of wealth does not appeal much. They seem to have no interest in wealth nor would they accept money if offered. Such a person will not be considered ‘smart’ since he is not money minded. After close study of such a man, people would be able to realise that money dominates everyone except the one who doesn’t crave to be wealthy. He would stand fearless in whatever he does and holds the capacity to make others fear him. He would also be able to control the money minded people.  

The soul of youth develop certain darkness like horror of desolation and worthlessness, which should be talked about. 

The solution that the author presents is to interest yourself, to invest in the happiness of others and not fall prey to one’s own perception. There are times when dark clouds hover when our knowledge and experience don’t help, we need to leave it to the power of the almighty. “In other words, take anything and everything seriously except yourself”. 

The author ends his speech with an interesting fact that there are some students who will be urged to acquire wealth and not consider living with humanity. As the man who goes to seek wealth, considering it as ‘smartness’ and in the course of action forgets his fellow man. The author says that when we see our friends trying to be ‘smart’ we should show them a better way. Thus, advises learning about how to live a worthy life instead of seeking to have a wealthy life.
