way
Necessity is the mother of
invention
The power of determination and
observation skills helps overcome challenges or unpleasant situations in life.
The narrative by Nicholas Bentley, The Look-out Man is where the narrator
and protagonist, William Morris, a 53-year-old man, solves a problem or issue
that arose in the Regnier Jewelry shop where he worked.
Morris, along with
his assistant, Miss Susskind, works for Mr. Regnier in his antique jewellery shop.
In the shop there was an early seventeenth century ring, which Mr. Regnier
adored a lot and had put a fancy amount on. One day, while they were with a customer,
Morris noticed that the ring was missing. They checked with the man but
couldn’t find it. Mr. Regnier felt the customer was a noble man, and they
doubted him. Soon there came a lady, whom Morris had seen waiting for someone
while he was peering through the glass window in the morning. She bought a
cheap bracelet for repair, which made him doubt the whole situation even more.
Slowly, Morris got the whole concept clear as he remembered that the man had
stopped chewing gum when they were searching for the ring. So he must have
stuck the ring in the chewing gum somewhere. The girl removed her gloves at the
same point where the man was standing.
Morris had
noticed that the whole plot for the theft was planned by the two of them. When
insisted, the afraid girl handed the ring back. With his sheer determination
and exploration of the situation, Morris was able to save the valuable jewellery.
William Morris
interest in detective fiction helps him intend to solve the problem. The
prerequisite traits include association, balance in relationships, appropriate
communication with his fellow employees, and a goal-oriented perspective. With
such qualities, we can put our minds to the problem and be able to solve it.
A workable
solution would always be there for every problem. Rather, many workable
solutions can be found to help troubleshoot an issue. Morris identified
something unusual with the girl wandering outside, and he soon was able to
define the issue as theft. Soon he explored the characters and their behaviors
to find a possible solution, and thus, with his confronting the girl, his
action led to solving the case of theft.
